![]() I was surprised on how much I actually enjoyed 3 Days to Kill. 3 Days to Kill was directed by Luc Besson, who has definitely grown on me as a director. After checking out the trailers, I thought it would be an over the top action flick along the lines of Liam Neeson’s Taken, but it wasn’t. But first, he must complete one last mission – even if it means juggling the two toughest assignments yet: hunting down the world’s most ruthless terrorist and looking after his teenage daughter for the first time in ten years, while his wife is out of town.ģ Days to Kill was definitely not the film I expected. ![]() STARRING: Kevin Costner, Amber Heard, Hailee Steinfeld, Connie Nielsen, Richard Sammel, Eriq EbouaneyĪ dangerous international spy is determined to give up his high stakes life to finally build a closer relationship with his estranged wife and daughter, whom he’s previously kept at arm’s length to keep out of danger. Get comfortable in your seat: It's going to feel like you have plenty of time to pass.Hello everybody! Today we have Kevin Costner’s new film, 3 Days to Kill. And while Costner gets nothing but your standard rogue-agent dialogue, he's aging gracefully and makes a believable beleaguered agent.īut he has so little to work with that the movie grinds to a halt every time he's not turning a goon into Swiss cheese. Ethan's mystery drug just happens to make him pass out every time he's about to bring down a villain, likely prompting viewer questions: Will his cancer be cured? Is Vivi a villain? Will your theater offer refunds?ĭays does offer a plot surprise in the third act, and the car chases are top-notch. Scenes meant to establish bonding between father and child, which include Ethan teaching the high-schooler to dance and ride a bike, don't work when the kid is nearly as quick, clever and tall as Pops.Īnd Days embraces so much convention that a seminar could break out. Steinfeld, in particular, is simply too old for the part (she's 17 in real life). McG ( Charlie's Angels, Terminator Salvation) has a firm grip on action, if not acting. The French police tell him simply that squatters have rights in France, and to boot them out would land Ethan in jail.Īnd that's one of Days' more believable twists. After blowing away a few henchmen, Ethan comes home to find a family of squatters has moved into his house and painted his bedroom a wacky yellow. It's hard to tell what director McG was going for here, because each moment of tension comes undone with a scene of banality. You'll get lost trying to keep track of the baddies, but just remember: If they're foreign, they're evil. Yep.Įthan takes the job and begins an odyssey through the streets of Paris to track down ruthless Europeans of varied vague accents. She not only wants Ethan to finish the assignment, she also has a mystery drug that could cure his cancer if he agrees. ![]() The set-up is so rushed and pat that we barely have time to digest Days' next wrinkle: the beautiful operative Vivi Delay (Amber Heard). He learns he has brain cancer that's spread to his lungs and that he has three months to live.Įthan decides it's time to get to know his estranged wife Christine (Connie Nielsen) and teenage daughter Zoey (Hailee Steinfeld), who gets a happy birthday call once a year from Dad. ![]() The bust goes awry when Ethan, bearing down on his targets, gets dizzy and falls (it happens a lot). When we meet him, he's with a group of fellow super-spies tasked with bringing down a mysterious arms dealer, known as "The Wolf," and his henchman, "The Albino." The latter resembles Gollum if he left the Lord of the Rings set and swiped an Armani suit on the way out. But it's hardly enough to bring this spy flick in from the cold.Ĭostner plays Ethan Renner, a CIA operative good at making people dead and lousy at being a dad. The result is a convoluted mess that has one good twist and two good car chases. It does, however, seem to go on at least a day and a half.Ĭontrived and manic, Days (* 1/2 out of four rated PG-13 opens Friday nationwide) can't decide whether it's a thriller, comedy or feel-good family film. For Kevin Costner fans, the good news is that 3 Days To Kill doesn't feel like that. ![]()
